1. Both Jacqueline Bussie in Outlaw Christian and Kaitlin Curtice in Native offer critiques of the Christian tradition of their respective childhoods, grounded in their life experiences and religious and cultural reflections as adults. Compare their respective approaches; how are they similar and how are they different? Identify key insights from each texts and explain how each author is engaged in critical reflection on Christian practice.
2. Kaitlin Curtice writes, “If we are to believe that the inclusive love of God is real, we’d better start building a better table.” (Curtice, 83) Throughout Native she uses metaphors of banquets and eating to illustrate a model of inclusivity that the church ought to have. What does she mean? Reflect on this metaphor; how does this tie to the Christian practice of Eucharist or Holy Communion, or miracles where Jesus feeds people, or when he shares the Last Supper with disciples? Does the practice of sharing food resonate with you as a metaphor for practicing Christianity? Explain.
3. How does Kaitlin Curtice’s analysis of racism serve as a critique of Christianity? Explain the connections she identifies between racism and Christian practice, especially Christian colonization of Indigenous people and land. What does this offer to Christians, Indigenous and otherwise? Explain.
4. Jacqueline Bussie offers a powerful vision of accompaniment as an alternative to other forms of theodicy, which may seek to explain questions about suffering in the face of God’s goodness. What is accompaniment? What examples does she provide to illustrate this practice? Identify examples from your own life, or from historical events, or from art (literature, film, television, music, etc.) that you think offer constructive examples of accompaniment that could enrich Christian practice.
