Additionally, each student will be required to make 2 thoughtful comments on two other classmate’s discussion board posts. The student will choose two posts that are personally meaningful and respond in detail explaining why their post was insightful.

For both parts: the student will be required to utilize personal insight as well as vocabulary from the textbook when constructing their discussion board journals and when responding to classmates posts.

Please note the specific guidelines that students are required to follow regarding their Journal Discussion Board questions.

Students should have an awareness that the Journal Discussion Board is a place where respectful communication is expected. The personal growth goals chosen by students may be very sensitive topics. Therefore, all shared insights and feedback should be given in a positive and caring way that utilizes the core conditions of warmth, empathy, respect, unconditional positive regard, genuineness, accurate understanding, congruence, nonjudgmental. Challenges and confrontations can be given – if done so in a positive, gentle, and beneficial way. Sharing in this environment can be tremendously powerful in providing the supportive conditions needed for change.

Chapter 3 Discussion Question

1. Think about a few of the major turning points in your life. Write down two significant turning points, and then state how you think they were important in your life. What difference did your decisions at these critical times make in your life?

A. Turning Point 1:

B. Impact of the decision on my life:

C. Turning Point 2:

D. Impact of the decision on my life:

2. What are you doing now that might have an effect on the kind of person you will be as you grow older?

3. What are some things you hope to do during the later years of your life? How do you think you will adjust to the things to come for you – whether it is middle age, late middle age, or late adulthood?

4. How would you like to respond to your body’s aging? How do you think you will respond to failing health or to physical limitations on your lifestyle?

5. What would you most want to be able to say about yourself and your life when you are an older adult?

Chapter 4 Discussion Question

1. Find a quiet room where you will not be disturbed. Go in and set and breath deeply into your stomach – releasing all thoughts. Inhaling and exhaling full cleansing breaths. Close your eyes and imagine you are walking up a beautiful mountain in Kentucky. The path winds gently upward around the mountain top. You see the trees, squirrels, birds all enjoying the sunshine. As you reach the top you notice a flat area with a small, clear mountain lake. You see a large smooth flat rock and you go to set on this rock enjoying the warm sunshine.

Now – see yourself as you have always wanted to be – wearing clothes that represent you the best, having your hair, body, make-up, the way you have always wanted them to be. Feeling fit and strong as you have always wanted. Having plenty of rest and having the diet of food you have always wanted for your body. Having the spiritual relationship you have always wanted. Having the relationships with family, friend’s, and coworkers you have always wanted. Having the job and career you have always wanted. Having the financial situation you have always wanted.

Close your eyes and visualize this “you” standing on the rock with rays of warm sunlight shining on you. Allow yourself at least five minutes to sit quietly with your eyes closed visualizing this “you”.

When you are content with your vision – get a writing utensil and paper and write out who this person was and what he or she looked like. What did their life look like?

For your discussion board question – write how it felt for you to do this exercise? How do you feel about the person you saw in your vision? Do you think working toward becoming this person is reasonable? Attainable? Has having this vision of yourself changed you in any way?
