Discuss with your cooperating teacher/mentor how they handle conflicts that may arise during an IEP (whether it is an initial, review, or addendum/amendment meeting). Share at least one strategy that has been shared with you that you plan to use if needed in a future IEP meeting. In addition, explain how you plan to keep the IEP meeting on track if a conflict occurs.
.When I discussed with my mentor teacher how they handle conflicts that may arise during an IEP there was many different things that she suggested that could help with curving opinions. My mentor teacher expressed that, right now, she has a great group of students and she has a great working relationship with all the stakeholders that are on her case load. Therefor conflicts do not usually arise with the people she works with now. However, in the past some of the things that have come up are differing opinions when it comes to student placement. For example, in the past she had a student that had ED and requested that the student be moved to a different placement that was better set up to assist the student. The guardians did not want the student to be moved to an ED placement because that would mean changing schools. To help the guardians to understand that this was for the benefit of the student she explained the benefits of how the change could help the student. Explaining that the student would be with a smaller class size, with two educators, and the student would get more of the attention that they would need that they are currently not getting. Another way that she remediates the situation is by presenting data to the families. This data could include interventions that have been put in place and results, data about the students learning, and data involving the success that the student could experience. My mentor teacher expressed that it is important to help families and other stakeholders to understand that any changes to a student’s placement or otherwise is for the benefit of the students education, to make it a positive thing. Lastly, we discussed that to have the best outcome it is important to make all stakeholders feel like they are a part of all decisions made and to come to meetings prepared. If I am hosting an IEP meeting and conflict arises, I will use a lot of the same techniques that my mentor teacher uses to help keep the meeting on track. I would come to the meeting prepared with all data that I have collected about the students. This could include formal assessment, running records or other observations, work samples, and so on. I plan to have open communication with guardians, students, and other stakeholders to get a full picture of the student’s needs. If something comes up and I am not able to provide a solution, then I will ensure the guardians that I will resolve the problem to best serve the student. If I am requesting a change of placement, I will bring information to help the guardians to understand why I am recommending this and information about how this will better assist the student’s needs. Like I have stated previously it takes a community to raise a child and I would ensure that all stakeholders are on the same
