* Outline the essay first before writing it, including thesis and intro paragraph. Description on each of these is below:-

* Your thesis will need to offer your reader more than a simple statement of fact. Rather, your thesis will
present to the reader a point of debate, a theory that will need to be worked out in front of the
reader in order to be convincing. In other words, your thesis will make an interesting claim about the
text(s) at hand—as opposed to merely describing the text(s)—and your paper as a whole will present your
case to the reader by backing up your thesis using support from the text(s). Always keep in mind these
thesis keys: original, debatable, interesting, arguable, and specific.

* Your intro paragraph should clearly present your thesis about the text(s) at hand, as well as a sense of
your rhetorical plan and rationale for arguing in support of that thesis.
In other words, your intro paragraph will need to help your reader to clearly understand What, How,
and Why you are arguing about your selected text(s). Put differently, your reader should leave your
intro paragraph with a clear sense of your essay’s answers to these three questions: What are you
arguing about these texts? How are you going to argue the matter at hand? Why are you arguing
about this particular matter?
I recommend that you avoid starting with a universal statement (“From the dawn of time…”); instead,
get right to your own specific interests in the particular case that you’ll be pursuing in the essay. In other
words, start your essay with the start of your argument.
I also recommend that you avoid a “cliff-hanger” intro paragraph, or one that only vaguely hints at the
central debatable claim and leaves the reader guessing about what, how, and why you’re arguing.

* Constructing an essay outline will help you to consider the structure and flow of your provisional
argument—and help you to imagine where textual evidence may be deployed. In terms of the outline,
try to imagine the big building blocks of the case—and carefully consider the order in which you
might argue your case. Given your argument, what order will best help to heighten the essay’s overall
degree of convincingness? You’ll also want to begin to slot in textual specifics (your “proof”); consider
including here actual quotes/pages, particular examples, images, words, etc., that connect with the issues
your case raises and explores.

* Your essays should have these qualities on the following elements: title; thesis/intro paragraph;
argument originality/organization; textual evidence; conclusion; clarity/style of expression;
mechanics/grammar/format. While all listed elements matter, some elements will clearly matter more
than others. For instance, while an effective title is important, it also does not carry the same weight as
sustained deployment of textual evidence throughout an essay. Commas matter, of course, but not as
much as convincing argumentation. Put differently, write carefully, thoughtfully, and with attention to
detail—and keep in mind all the while that what matters most of all in this assignment is analytical
argumentation by way of quotation-analysis-of-quotation.

* Make sure your 5 pages are full and 12-point.
