Extra Credit News Event Paper
What you’ll need:
For this extra credit opportunity you’ll need to find an international news story about which to write an evaluation. The news source can be in any language and from any country, however the news event itself must deal on some level with issues relevant to class; that is, it must have an intercultural aspect. This could be a story about international politics, wars, humanitarian efforts, immigration, education, etc. The intercultural aspect of the story could also manifest in its reporting, for example: a news event in China is being reported on by a British news source. Please do use online news sources for the event so that I can also access it. You will also need to watch the following video: http://www.ted.com/talks/chimamanda_adichie_the_danger_of_a_single_story.html (Links to an external site.)
What it’s about:
You’ll writing a short paper evaluating the story told in the news article. Drawing from the TED talk by Chimamanda Adichie about the dangers of “a single story,” as well as what we learned from lecture about the ways in which language can shape and determine our interpretations of peoples and cultures, you’ll need to identify the “single story” in that news article. By the “single story” I mean identify who the article is portraying and how it is portraying them. For example, think back to the articles from lecture talking about the victims of Katrina in New Orleans; the first article had a picture of two White victims who were said to be scavenging for food in grocery stores, whereas the second articles had pictures of Black victims who were said to be looting grocery stores. Who is the “single story” about and what does it say about them?
Then I would like you to try and identify another story that the article isn’t addressing. Again with the Katrina articles about the Black victims, the story is casting the Black victims as looters and thieves, but doesn’t acknowledge the possibility that these are just desperate people who under normal circumstances would never participate in this kind of behavior, that perhaps they have starving family members in desperate need of aid not being provided by their government, or simply consider how labeling them as looters is a story in and of itself. These other stories can be your own suppositions and thoughts, or you can draw from other articles about the same event that show another side of the issue.
Paper must be 2 pages, typed, double spaced, 12 point, Times New Romans (note: 1 page and a sentence does not count as 2 pages, get as close to full pages as possible)
Please submit the paper on Canvas by the deadline stated
Be sure to include the URL for the article you used in your paper (you will not receive credit unless I can actually see the article)
This will be worth 5 extra credit points
