Formal research papers begin with a proposal. Your paper, which will take the 8 weeks of this course to plan, draft, revise, and edit, will be about 2,000 words in total. To meet this daunting task, you should begin with a strong proposal.
Complete the following areas. Try to provide as full of an answer as possible so your instructor can give you feedback on which direction to take.
Follow the example here. Then, copy and paste it into a Microsoft Word or other word processing system document. Remove the text, keeping only the bolded words. Then, put in your own.
Alternatively, you may download the attached file and use that as a template.
TOPIC: Gendered standards of clothing choice
For Critical Paper 1 and 2, you will need to formulate a driving question. Ideally, it should be based on your exploratory themes. If, after reading John Updike’s “A&P,” I was interested in societal standards of dress, I might ask the following:
Why do some individuals challenge gender standards in clothing choice?
Note how this question will lead to causal analysis. However, the question does not only need to lead to causal analysis or evaluation writing. Here is another example:
What does it mean to be a man in contemporary American society insofar as clothing is concerned?
Note how this paper will lead to definition writing. Here is one final example:
How can American society achieve fairness when it comes to gender standards for clothing?
This paper seems to indicate there is a problem (unfairness). It will likely propose a solution—making it a problem-solution style paper.
RHETORICAL MODES REQUIRED:
You may draw on the two more advanced rhetorical modes of Composition II, namely Evaluation and Causal Analysis. You may also use Composition I modes like Exemplification, Problem-Solution, Compare-Contrast, and Definition. You may also draw on other modes like Process Writing, Classification, and others. Do NOT write in Narrative.
Think here about what college disciplines are being touched on. Is your paper mainly a medical paper? Does it touch on criminal justice? A paper might touch on one area, but it may also touch many. What we want you to do here is to think about what college subjects you are engaging. Maybe your paper will be related to your major, but it does not necessarily have to be, either.
Dress codes disproportionately affect womenWomen expected to appear weak and feminine, whereas men are expected to appear strongWhat about individuals who do not fit a strict “male” or female” standard like drag queens or metrosexuals?
BRIEF ABSTRACT: An abstract should essentially answer three questions. In an APA formatted paper, an abstract is actually part of your essay, whereas MLA should not include it in the final submission. Abstracts answer the questions, “What is your argument?”, “How do you make your argument?”, and “Why does your argument matter?” I will go with my causal analysis question: Why do some individuals challenge gender standards in clothing choice? I will also go with a root cause analysis. I will argue that people want to feel like they exercise control over their lives. I make my argument by exploring three possible causes but arguing in favor of one. I also use psychology journals. My argument matters because we all want to be able to express individuality.
THESIS: While there are many reasons for people to express challenge gender norms in dress and clothing choices, ultimately, people desire to express individuality, and doing so through clothing is one readily available option for such expression.
