Some people think that an autocratic leadership style and emotional intelligence are mutually exclusive. For this discussion, argue the opposite. Technical Skills
These skills are based on knowledge that is specific to a particular job. For example, a mechanic’s technical skills include the ability to use tools and to fix problems with vehicles. An administrative assistant’s technical skills relate to using a computer, scheduling appointments, answering phones, etc.

Cognitive Skills
These skills are related to a person’s IQ (Intelligence Quotient). They involve the extent to which someone can concentrate, how they learn, how they retain information, and how they can focus on the task at hand.

Emotional Skills
These skills are related to a person’s emotional intelligence, sometimes referred to as EQ (Emotional Quotient). They include being aware of your own emotions, being able to regulate your emotions appropriately to fit the context, being able to experience and express empathy for others, and the ability to interact well with others (i.e., social skills).

Most people have the required technical skills and cognitive skills to hold down a job. Not everyone has sufficient emotional skills, however. If someone’s emotional intelligence is low, they may be good at the technical aspects of their job, but they often have difficulty working well with other people. A person’s level of emotional intelligence greatly impacts the degree to which they will be successful in any type of supervisory role.

As a supervisor, you must be emotionally intelligent in order to effectively motivate and lead the people on your team. You also need to continually develop your emotional intelligence. Let’s look at a few ways to do that.

Developing Emotional Intelligence

Practice mindfulness.
Train yourself to be aware “in the moment” of how you are feeling—without judging those feelings. Develop the habit of naming your emotions. Being able to identify the emotions you are experiencing allows you to acknowledge them for what they are.

Observe your interactions with others.
Work on seeing yourself as objectively as possible as you communicate with other people, as if you were viewing yourself on a video feed. Notice how other people respond to what you say and do. Note the words and behaviors that seem to have a positive effect on people around you, along with those that appear to affect people negatively.

Identify patterns in your interactions with others and set goals for improvement.
This is a valuable self-help technique. When you are able to recognize recurring patterns that are aren’t positive or productive, you can alter the way you communicate. Keep the other person (or people) in mind by asking yourself how you would feel if you were on the receiving end of your own words and/or behaviors.

Managing yourself—especially with regard to your EQ—will take practice and patience. Those who will be interviewing you for a job will be especially interested in your level of emotional intelligence. Therefore, it is advantageous to your career to begin practicing so that when your management opportunity arises, you will only have to worry about the job, not yourself. You will then be able to concentrate on the leadership style that best fits the situation.

Emotional Intelligence and Leadership Styles

In our last discussion, we considered several leadership styles—Coach, Visionary, Servant, Autocratic, Laissez-Fair or Hands-Off, Democratic, Pacesetter, Transformational, Transactional, and Bureaucratic. Some of these styles require more emotional intelligence than others. It may be helpful for you to identify two styles that most closely reflect your current leadership tendencies and then to determine what aspects of those leadership styles can be improved by developing greater emotional intelligence.
