Consider the type of work environment you are interested in working in and the different leadership styles we have discussed. Which would you consider the best leadership style for that type of surrounding and how will that leadership style encourage growth of your employees and company? Read about the different styles below.
What makes someone a good leader, an influential leader, or even an effective leader? Being able to finesse leadership styles takes time. In some management situations, one form of leadership may be highly desirable, but in another situation, that method would not work. Knowing yourself and those you work with can help you determine the best leadership style for you and your situation. Sometimes it takes learning by trial and error to discover the “magic formula”. Let’s look at some leadership styles to better understand and realize methods that may work best for you. According to indeed (n.d.) there are 10 common leadership styles:
Coach – This leadership style recognizes the strengths and weaknesses of each team member and helps motive them to improve individually. This type of leader motivates the team by helping them create goals. The style gives clear expectations and motivates the team. It does take a lot of time and effort to create this leadership environment. This style could help a team who feels underappreciated or underutilized.
Visionary – This leadership style aims to develop confidence in a work team. The main focus is progress and change and a visionary leadership style can inspire others and help usher in change and progression. This leadership style is especially effective with a company that is growing fast or facing restructuring.
Servant – This leadership style focuses on employee satisfaction and collaboration. Servant leaders gain respect from their team because they want their employees to feel valued and fulfilled. This leadership style can help build morale in a team and company because of the “employee first” mentality.
Autocratic – This leadership style is all about results. The focus stays on how efficient and effective the team can be. There is not much room for “thinking outside the box” with this type of leadership style. This style would benefit an environment that follows direct and strict guidelines to be successful such as a hospital emergency room.
Laissez-fair or hands-off – This form of leadership is the opposite of the autocratic. This type of leader would delegate many tasks and provide little supervision which would open more possibilities to accomplish other projects. This type of leadership style could be used in a team that is well established and experienced and who know what is expected of them.
Democratic – The democratic leadership style reaches out to team members for ideas and feedback and then considers those options and makes a choice. This style encourages participation from team members and employee engagement and would benefit a company that needs new ideas and creativity when working on projects.
Pacesetter – This style of leadership focuses on performance. They set high standards and hold their team responsible for hitting their goals. The pacesetter environment is quick and energized to drive results and would not be a good option for those teams that need feedback and help. To get a project and goal done quickly, the pacesetter leadership style would be the best option.
Transformational – This leadership style is like the coaching style but instead of driving individual employee goals it drives organization objectives. This style could benefit a team that can handle delegation and arrive at the big picture without constant supervision.
Transactional – This style of leadership focuses on performance and arriving at a result to be able to enjoy the reward. This style of leadership is like the pacesetter style but holds a place for mentorship, training, and instruction as well. There still is not much room for creativity because of the high value put on the result or numbers. This style would work well with a team or company that needs to hit specific goals or sales numbers.
Bureaucratic – This leadership style expects rule followers and procedures to be done correctly much like the autocratic. In this style there is a developed hierarchy where each employee knows their place and their responsibilities. There isn’t much room for creativity or collaboration, but this style would work well in a business that is highly regulated like a government job.
