In this lesson, we are studying inequality in society by looking at race and ethnicity, and sex and gender. We’ve learned what race is, we’ve learned what ethnicity is, we’ve learned about prejudice, discrimination, and stereotypes. We’ve learned about inequality based on race/ethnicity and sex/gender. However, we can’t say we’ve done a thorough investigation of inequality unless we examine the ways in which race intersects with other identities.

In the United States, it is commonly believed that if we just work hard enough we will be successful and achieve the American Dream! We are taught to value hard work and individualism. However, by saying it is up to the individual, we are ignoring the structures in society that might be working for or against us. Conflict Theorists call it the intersectionality of social class, race, gender, and age, all causing some people to find it harder to advance in society.

Purpose:

Often socially constructed categories, such as race, class, gender, and social class are treated as mutually exclusive identities, but in both structural arrangements and the lived experience, they are intimately interdependent. This discussion will deepen our understanding of intersectionality/intersection theory and prepare us to apply it in real-world situations to better understand those around us. (Learning Objectives 1.12 and 7.)

Task:

Begin your post with a brief description of the intersectionality/intersection theory. Be sure to use in-text citations to refer to the source of your information!

Go to Inequality.is/personal to see how your income will vary depending on your age, sex, race, and educational attainment.

Create at least three examples, putting in the information for yourself, and then two other people who have a different combination of characteristics from your social location (age, race, gender, age, and education). (You should just change one or two characteristics to see how the income will change! If you change too many characteristics it will be hard to make any generalizations about how the characteristics intersect!)
Be sure to write down the characteristics that you use for your three examples. Include the details in your post.
Summarize how your three “people” had different incomes based on their characteristics. Who had the highest income? The lowest? What characteristics seemed to cause a change in income? Aside from educational attainment, the “people” have no control over their social location and their resulting salary!
In a new section, explain how we can use it to help understand the experiences of those around us who are racially or ethnically different than ourselves.
Ask your classmates a question at the end of your post to stimulate discussion.
Incorporate course material into your post, especially sections 1 and 2, to support your claims/arguments.
Be sure to cite the information you incorporated correctly using ASA, or APA styles.
Proofread and edit your post for clarity and standard English grammar.
Complete your post by the due date listed on the course schedule.
Read your classmates’ posts and engage with those that you give you new insights or intrigue you in some way.
Throughout the remainder of the lesson, be sure to check back and respond to classmates who have engaged with your post and in replies on others’ threads.
This allows you and your peers to actually “discuss,” to exchange ideas back and forth, to explore the topic, and learn from one another.
Remember, to earn full participation points, you must engage with others in the discussion on at least four different days during the lesson.
As you discuss with classmates, incorporate course material into your replies to support your claims.
Be sure to cite the information you incorporated correctly using ASA, or APA style.
