The outline from Professor:
Research paper topics are attached to this course outline below and students will be required to choose and write on one of the topics.
The paper must be no longer than 8 TYPE- WRITTEN DOUBLE–SPACED PAGES with a regular font (ie 12-point font page numbered and one-inch margins) – NO MORE.
Please use the CHICAGO or TURABIAN style of documentation. You may use footnotes or endnotes format for your papers but not “in- text” citations. 5 marks will de deducted for the use of “in-text citations”. The paper may be shorter provided the question is answered sufficiently well. If the paper is longer than the maximum length, only the first 8 pages will be graded. The paper must answer a question, providing an argument (based on evidence from research materials) to substantiate the answer given. All papers must begin with a brief introduction putting the question in its historical and institutional context, a thesis statement, and a set of definitions and descriptions of the key terms, a main body, and a conclusion. The paper will be evaluated on the basis of content, clarity of argument, and writing style (including grammar, spelling, and punctuation). For more information on essay writing, consult books in the library dealing with the subject-matter. Non-compliance with these requirements will result in a failed mark.
A paper which does not contain any citations (eg footnotes or endnotes) and bibliography will automatically be considered to be plagiarized and receive a mark of “0”. The bibliography should include at least 5 academic/scholarly items (books and articles from academic/professional refereed periodicals). Internet sources may be used in addition to academic books and articles but not as a subsititute for them.Where internet sources are used, a web address should be provided. Any paper which contains evidence of deliberate plagiarism will automatically receive a mark of 0. Please note papers will be graded based on clarity of organization, originality of thought and ideas, the depth of research, and quality of writing.
Some Relevant Periodicals that *MUST* be consulted for your papers (Choose one with an article that supports your subject-matter and thesis/argument)
International Organization, International Affairs, International Studies Quarterly, Journal of Conflict Resolution, Journal of Conflict Studies, Journal of Peace Research, SIPRI Yearbook, World Politics, International Relations, International Peacekeeping, International Journal of Human Rights, Foreign Policy, Foreign Affairs, International Security, Current History, Human Rights Quarterly, International Journal, Security Dialogue, Global Governance, Global Responsibility to Protect, Studies in Political Economy, Third World Quarterly, Millennium-Journal of International Studies, International Criminal Law Review, Journal of Conflict and Law
I have chosen to select the topic: Humanitarian Intervention/Responsibility to Protect in the Post-Cold War Period: An Evaluation
I would prefer if the former Yugoslavia, Kosovo War, and Rwandan Genocide were the three conflicts/case studies discussed in the paper.
Some sources I’d like consulted/applied are:
UN General Assembly resolution 46/182 “Strengthening of the coordination of humanitarian emergency assistance of the United Nations”
Evolution of the Doctrine and Practice of Humanitarian Intervention (Thesis) by Francis Kofi Abiew (really really great! could use chapter 3 and especially chapter 4 if you could! Really informs the whole essay!)
https://www.globalpolicy.org/component/content/article/154/26026.html (The baler doctrine really grasps what the uncertainty of the time is! The narratives predominately shifted the legal and ethical claims for the fundamental protection of human rights without violating state-sovereignty)
Syria, Press Framing, and the Responsibility to Protect Account (Chapter 2) Briggs, E. Donald, Soderlund, Walter C., Najem, Tom
Humanitarian intervention since 1990 and ‘liberal interventionism’ by Matthew Jamison
The Responsibility to Protect: Ending Mass Atrocity Crimes Once and For All by Gareth Evans (Chapter 2)
All the information for the essay is provided in the description from my professor, I usually use endnotes in my papers. I would like the essay to be around the idea of intervention to protect human rights as the growing importance for their protection came after WWII but was not thoroughly practiced until the thaw of the Cold War.
Focusing on the yearning for a functional intervention ‘with teeth’ so to say, to give intervention the grit it requires entering into armed or hostile environments. While the goals and intentions were realized by the interventions made, one must question if they were done swiftly? In Former Yugoslavia – effective, yes, but not quick enough, too much hesitation and it cost people their lives. In Kosovo – yes, was successful at bombing them like crazy, but did little to support the change of power after-the-fact and Kosovo still struggles as a result. Rwanda – absolutely atrocious response, did not take it seriously enough and to not intervene immediately was a disservice, not to mention borderline complicit.
But all were still useful in solidifying not only humanitarian intervention but the importance of responsibility to protect, and the protection and promotion of human rights.
In essence that is what I was hoping you may write about/include/mold after in your work.
This is worth a good percentage of my mark and I really really appreciate your time and care in this.
My cousin just passed away and I’m in no condition to do this myself so I just wanted to thank you for supporting my education in the meantime while I take one more thing off my plate.
Hope you, your family, and your loved ones are well. Stay safe.
