Human Needs, Human Rights, and Social Justice

Note: See below for the short reading of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a link to a chart of how human rights relate to human needs, and the reading for #7, which can be searched for material explaining the relationship of human rights to human needs and social justice (conceptualized as human liberation). One point per question plus one point for overall writing quality, one for spelling/grammar, and one for APA style of in-text citation AND print and preview Figure 1 in Dover (2019): https://tinyurl.com/Needs-Chart-from-Dover-2019 AND read the highlighted passages here: https://preview.tinyurl.com/Dover2019Highlights. from Dover (2019): Dover, M. A. (2019). A needs-based partial theory of human injustice: Oppression, dehumanization, exploitation, and systematic inequality in opportunities to address human needs. Humanity & Society, 23(4), 442-483: http://doi.org/10.1177/0160597619832623. For a solid summary of theories of human need, in lectures notes of Prof. Dover citing and including passages from many key works, see this link. The point is not merely to cite Dover or the Universal Declaration, but to also cite and discuss the authors Dover cites, using what is known as indirect citation. See LINKS and this section on Indirect Citation for how to learn this important APA style skill to cite David Gil, cited in an early paper by Dover. For example: (Gil, 1984, p. 26, cited in Dover, 2016, p. 4).

1. In one solid paragraph about 150 words in length using quotes and paraphrases from the reading (see #000 for how to cite indirect sources, not just Dr. Dover) as well as your own demonstration of your understanding of the material, discussion the Self-Determination theory of Deci and Ryan (SDT). Drawing on the text and the chart, explain your understanding of this key theory. This should be one well-written and grammar checked paragraph, designed to educate other students in the online discussion. Be sure to use APA style to cite the page number (Van Wormer & Besthorn, 2017, p. 11). This should be a combination of paraphrasing of the reading, at least one quote from the reading (a part of a sentence or a full sentence, properly cited introduced and cited using APA style), and your own understanding of the theory and/or a question about it.

2. In one solid paragraph about 150 words in length using quotes and paraphrases from the reading (see #000 for how to cite indirect sources, not just Dr. Dover) as well as your own demonstration of your understanding of the material, discussion the Theory of Human Need of Doyal and Gough (THN).

3. Drawing on Dover (2019) and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights discuss the theory of human need of Doyal/Gough and/or the theory of psychological needs for a sense of relatedness, competence and autonomy of Deci/Ryan, by applying them to this observation about the nature of racism by Camara Phyllis Jones, MD, Ph.D. (2000, p. 1212), “Indeed, institutional racism is often evident as inaction in the face of need. Institutional racism manifests itself both in material conditions and in access to power. With regard to material conditions, examples include differential access to quality education, sound housing, gainful employment, appropriate medical facilities, and a clean environment. With regard to access to power, examples include differential access to information (including one’s own history), resources (including wealth and organizational infrastructure), and voice (including voting rights, representation in government, and control of the media). It is important to note that the association between socioeconomic status and race in the United States has its origins in discrete historical events but persists because of contemporary structural factors that perpetuate those historical injustices. In other words, it is because of institutionalized racism that there is an association between socioeconomic status and race in this country.” In other words, how can theories of human need and the Universal Declaration help you understand the nature of how racism manifests itself in too many aspects of our nation’s life. In other words, explain how these ways of thinking about violations of human rights and wrongfully unmet human needs help you to understand the history and present nature of racism in US society. Feel free to provide examples of racism that you can understand using theories of human need and Dr. Jones passage. Full citation: Jones, C. P. (2000, p. 1212). Levels of Racism: A Theoretic Framework and a Gardener’s Tale. American Journal of Public Health, 90(8), 1212-1215. https://doi.org/10.2105/AJPH.90.8.1212. In your answer, about 150 words in length, draw on Jones (2000), Dover (2019) and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, quoting them and paraphrasing them properly, and supplying the page numbers for both quotes and paraphrases.

4. (Up to 1 point) Draw on the film to first show what happened in a specific scene and moment within the film that is relevant to the readings for the #7 Human Needs, Human Rights and Social Justice assignment and which you feel illustrates the relevance of one or more of the key theories from the reading. Then draw on those readings to interpret what happened. How were human needs wrongfully unmet or human rights violated? Up to 1 point. About 150 words well balanced between narrative and theory. Pretend the reader does not know anything about the theory, so you must cite it and explain it and how it is relevant.
