HIV/AIDS in African Context and Causes of High HIV Prevalence

Epstein’s (2007)’s chapters discuss such questions as: “What is “concurrency”? How does concurrency theory explain the disproportionate prevalence of HIV in Africa? Why is concurrency far more dangerous than serial monogamy? How is the concurrency related to other social, economic and political issues?
In your essay, explain how and why the concurrency is related to the higher and more rapid spread of HIV in Africa. Also elaborate the comparison on the pattern of sexual behaviors between African countries (like Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia or Lesotho) and US and Thailand as evidence for the hypothesis. Discuss the nature of the concurrency network such as condom use (or lack thereof) or the so-called “viremic window.” In addition, discuss the deeper implications of the long-term concurrency to gender issues (such as gender inequality, economic inequity associated with gender, domestic violence, or condom use) in the cases of the Masai tribe in Kenya and South Africa.
