Instructions:

This assignment requires you to make an argument about the persuasiveness of a written argument and offer evidence from the text to support your evaluation of its persuasiveness. To analyze an argument, you have to be a rhetorical reader—that is, an active and critical reader who can explain not just what an author says but how persuasive the author is or isn’t and why. You should focus not on the issue but on what choices an author has made and how those choices affect the audience’s response to the argument.

Essay Requirements
Your final essay will demonstrate the skills for academic writing used in the first essay and follow the organization and requirements for a rhetorical analysis:
• Your introduction paragraph should engage your audience, establish your credibility, and provide relevant information about the rhetorical context of the article, including the author, the publication information, the intended audience, and a brief summary of the article.
• Your thesis should be the last sentence of your introduction and should clearly state your claim about the persuasiveness of the article and reasons to support your claim.
• The four body paragraphs should analyze the rhetoric of the article. In some order, you must analyze the writer’s credibility (as established in the text itself), the writer’s emotional appeals, and the writer’s logic. The order and organization of ideas are up to you.
• You should provide support—both evidence and analysis—for every claim you make in the essay. Use short quotations as evidence of your claims about the writer’s rhetoric, and then thoroughly explain the evidence and its significance (its effect on the audience and persuasiveness of the argument).
• End with a conclusion that summarizes and synthesizes your essay (explains “so what”).
• You may use and cite reliable sources in addition to the speech if you need to provide context about the speaker or issues.
• This is a formal essay; use Standard English grammar and third-person POV.
• The essay must be six paragraphs (as specified above) and 750-1000 words (not including the Works Cited page). You should follow the formatting instructions in the syllabus and MLA guidelines.
