E: Film at the End of the World
DUE: TUESDAY 12/1 by Midnight
This semester we have worked with films from around the world and in various genres addressing end-of- the world scenarios and how they speak to our day-to-day lived experience. The Final Project is your opportunity to develop an in-depth work on a film from the syllabus, with the option of also treating another end-of-the-world film of your choice.
Please select one of the options outlined below. If you have an alternative idea for the Final Project, please describe it in your proposal and we can discuss appropriate parameters for the project.
Final Project Proposals due TUESDAY 10/20. One-paragraph proposal due before class. Written Essay
Choose a film from the syllabus (or two films, with the option of one that is not on the syllabus) and write an analytical essay addressing the EOTW themes of the film(s) and how the filmmaking itself speaks to these themes. You may not work with the same film(s) you used for the Midterm Essay.
Length: 3000 words.
College essay format: double-spaced, standard serif font (such as Times), one-inch margins.
Name and page numbers on each page.
Inventive and descriptive title.
“Works Cited” page in MLA citation format.
Work with one or two films. If you work with two films, be sure to elaborate a single comparative thesis engaging the films together.
Find a clear, focused topic, one that provides a valuable and relevant perspective on the film or film(s).
Argue an original thesis that offers a substantial insight and illuminates important aspects of the film(s).
Illustrate your ideas with film stills.
Support your thesis in-depth film analysis. Address key scenes or sequences that illustrate your
arguments, or examine an integral pattern that structures the film.
Research and cite peer-reviewed, authoritative sources. You must have at least four (3) reliable sources—articles, books, and other peer-reviewed sources. Incorporate material from these sources only to support your own original observations and insights.
The “Discussion Topics,” readings, and lectures for each film can provide starting points for developing your thesis.
Turn in your essay as a Microsoft Word document in Moodle.
If your file size is too large, you can upload the essay to Google Drive, Dropbox, or other cloud
service and email a link to me.
