This week’s reading talked about the slums of Borneo. Kaplan highlights the incredible disparity between Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, and the slums located on the island of Borneo. After reading how far Malaysia’s capital had developed a few weeks ago, it was somewhat shocking to read that there were areas that Malaysia’s government had, for lack of a better word, neglected. Kaplan describes these slums as essentially being left backward in time “built of cheap wood and patches of corrugated iron.” It is interesting to see how this part of Malaysia tells a completely different story compared to that of the capital and how not too far from it, a modern war with sophisticated technology is taking place.

Kaplan’s epilogue, despite being short, allowed me to feel the tension between the Filipino refugees and the locals. On one hand, the refugees don’t have a place to go; these slums are the only shelter they have. On the other hand, the locals feel threatened by the fact that they have now become a minority due to the large influx of refugees. One of the main worries of the local population is that Islam will have a more prominent role in the area, and the other is that this increase of Filipinos will give the Philippines a reason for taking back Sabah which they claim as being part of their territory. I feel like these worries just go to show how neglectful the government has been with the influx of Filipino refugees in Sabah.

This week, I would like to present my views of the reading of the Epilogue of the class’ Kaplan textbook, Asia’s Cauldron: The South China Sea and the End of a Stable Pacific. The epilogue title is “The Slums of Borneo” and it deals with the town of Kota Kinabalu near the northern tip of Borneo with its unkempt stretch and overpasses, a carved-out-of-the-jungle feel. When presenting my views, I will be contributing new and relevant information to the students in this course. The northern tip of Borneo is helped by a suitable geography, global Islam, and globalization; this is part of the nation-state of Malaysia and, as the peninsular Malaysia, it has its strong foundations or traditions. They called it a slum, but to me it’s precious. It happens that the difficulties of the South China Sea are, at least in part, the trials of post-colonialism, in which newly formed communities emerging out of world must now reconcile which group controls what on the inside, and which state controls the waters outside. The creation of Malaysia was a product of the complex relationship between Tunku Abdul Rahman and Lee Kuan Yew and a product of the geography and the territorial boundaries between Great Britain and the Netherlands on Borneo. The navies and air forces in the contest over the South China Sea are manifestations of the development and the strong institutions of the region. Because of the potential futures, the book by Kaplan focuses on the most important theater during the second decade of the twenty-first century, and I am afraid of China’s military growth in the region where the Western Pacific and the Indian Ocean come together
