What expectations might you have for working with colleagues from different cultures, and what tools might be helpful for leveraging the diversity of your team? This essay asks you to compare and contrast your own cultural preferences around working, disagreeing, making decisions, etc. to those of your teammates who come from cultural perspectives either similar or very different from your own. Begin by completing Meyer’s Cultural Profile Assessment for yourself to gain insight into your own culturally-based tendencies and preferences (Canvas>Modules>Week 6 or Assignments). After completing the cultural profile tool, get together virtually with your team (no fewer than 3 and no more than 4) and together map your cultural preferences based on Erin Meyer’s work. Team members will use their own specific results based on the Cultural Profile Assessment. The Assessment will reveal where on the 8 behavioral scales your team members are located. You will use this mapping to analyze the similarities and differences your team likely will encounter during your interactions together as you pursue an imagined important team mission/ goal (be as creative about your goal as you like, but it needs to include realistic scenarios of interaction so that you can analyze and offer practical solutions with some degree of subtlety and confidence). To make your analysis effective, you should offer specific examples of what you understand might be your working interactions within your team, and how team members may need to adapt or change in order to work together productively. The assigned course readings for Week 6 (see Syllabus) provide the background for this prompt. It is expected that your team project will include references to these required readings as evidence of your understanding. You can discuss your project with the TA, but there will be no pre-submission reading of material. Instead, the TA would be happy to discuss your ideas if you complete a project outline/worksheet beforehand. Writing Prompt (1500 – 1800 words) How would you expect your team to interact across 4 of Meyer’s behavioral scales, and how would you expect your teammates might adjust their own behaviors to build rapport and to make progress toward the team mission/goal? What do you expect would be shared preferences that would facilitate your good working relationships? What do you expect would be possible areas of misunderstanding or conflict? What solutions can you suggest to help the team overcome possible tension and achieve success? Begin with a brief introduction of your team and its mission/goal. In order to use realistic situations for your analysis, be sure you understand the goal (e.g., don’t imagine a software development team if you don’t know how one would function). Be sure to cover at least 4 scales from Meyer’s Cultural Profile Assessment for your team for full credit (e.g., pick four from the following: communicating, evaluating, persuading, leading, deciding, trusting, disagreeing, and scheduling)
