Introduction of the approach – some brief statements about the approach and its use. This can include brief statements about the founders or major contributors of the approach, the populations and problems the approach is used with, or brief remarks about the history of the approach.

The introduction should conclude with a brief listing of what the reader will be reading or the objectives of the paper – what the paper will cover in the order in which it will be presented. This section might be ½ to ¾ page long. Notice in the grading rubric below that you can get only 3 out of 60 points for this section, so don’t use too much of your 11 pages on this section.

Description of CBT

a. Describe the main underlying premises of the approach. This is a description of the central ideas and assumptions that the approach is based on. This might be seen as the theory section of the paper. This section might be about 3 pages long. 8/60 points are possible for this section.

b. Describe several of the key intervention strategies identified with the approach. This includes specific descriptions of how the chosen intervention strategies are actually implemented and their purposes. Describe what the therapist actually does in session. This section might be about 3 pages long. 10/60 points are possible for this section.

Effectiveness of CBT

Review the research documenting the effectiveness of the approach. At least five of your peer reviewed journal article references for this paper must be used to document the effectiveness of the approach in this section of the paper. This section should be made up of descriptions of at least five peer reviewed articles describing actual research projects with clients and reported outcomes that report on the effectiveness of the approach by reporting actual findings of therapeutic efforts. Some of the articles utilized in this section will describe research projects directly involving members of marginalized groups. In this case, “marginalized groups” means populations such as ethnic minorities, the elderly, LGBTQ+ clients, people with developmental disabilities, etc. – those groups that have been traditionally at risk of discrimination and oppression in our society. Discuss issues regarding the use of the modality with marginalized populations or populations at risk – either in this section or another. A model for how information from each article should be presented in the paper is provided below. This section might be 4-5 pages long. 16/60 points are possible for this section.


Briefly summarize the contents of the paper

Summarize areas of future research needs. What have recent researchers reported as lacking in the area of applied research and/or problems or deficiencies with the approach. Cite sources for the issues discussed. Discuss issues related to lack of use with or research involving at risk populations. This section might be about ¾ of a page long. Four points are possible for this section.

c. Write in third person, not first or second person.

d. Utilize at least 8 primary references from peer reviewed journals. No more than three of these references can be from before the year 2000 and none should have been published before 1990. References citing measures used by researchers should not be considered as among the required 8.

e. The paper should be at least 11 double-spaced pages in length, excluding your cover page and reference list.

f. Use a separate cover page and a separate reference page. Use your reference page to list, in alphabetical order, all of the references you cite in your paper. Only list references that you cite. Staple your paper. No folders.

Papers are to be written only in 12 point, Times New Roman font and in APA style. The student should not repeat the words of other authors but will report in the student’s own words what they find in the research. Quotes should be used very minimally, if at all. Quoting to any significant degree will affect the student’s grade negatively

Use one-inch margins on the top and bottom and 1¼ inch margins on the left and right. Margins, font, line spacing, and the length of your paper are important to your grade. Also, do not skip lines in the body of your paper for any reason, and do not use bulleting or outline form for any part of your work – use narrative only. Other than for specific phrases unique to the modality, do not quote other authors. This paper is to be written completely in your own words. More than minimal use of quotes or use of bulleting or outline form will negatively affect the student’s grade on this assignment.
