OUT OF CLASS ESSAY #3: CAUSE AND EFFECT WEIGHT: Outline/first draft: 10 points. Second draft/essay form: 20 points LENGTH: 3-4 pages DUE DATES: FIRST DRAFT IN OUTLINE FORM: Monday, November 23 to BS’s “Assignments” which you access by going to “Assessments” first. No extensions. BS will close the site at 11:30pm SECOND/DRAFT IN ESSAY FORM: Monday, December 7 by 11:30pm. As Elizabeth Penfield discusses in chapters 6 and 7 of Short Takes: Model Essays for Composition, a process analysis paper discusses HOW something happened while a cause or effect paper explores WHY something happened. When you write a Cause or Effect paper, you want to discuss both causes and/or effects briefly, but the paper MUST concentrate on one only: the causes of the phenomenon or the effects of it. In preparation for the cause/effect essay and to ensure you organize your work logically, you will write the first (complete) draft in outline form very much like you did for essays #1 and #2. Your outline should include the thesis, topic sentences for each body paragraph and examples as evidence for each reason. Again, you need to provide three (3) reasons (whys) for the assertion or claim you will make and develop clear, strong, and descriptive topic sentences for each body paragraph. For more help, you should review chapters 7 and 8 of Penfield’s book and the essays included in it. After completing the outline, you should use the pointers Penfield provides at the end of the chapter to check, revise, and proofread your work. MAKE SURE TO USE TRANSITIONS TO DEVELOP THE TOPIC SENTENCES FOR EACH PARAGRAPH (SEE G. GRAFF ON THIS MATTER). ASSIGNMENT: The theme of the current One Book, One Chicago (OBOC) is “Beyond Borders.” Keeping this statement and Mohsin Hamid’s Exit West, choose one of the subjects from the list below and write a well-developed essay on it. 1. Refugees (global community); 2. Ethnic neighborhoods in Chicago; 3. Immigrants (local community: The United States); 4. Refugees and the environment (global community). AS ALWAYS, YOUR PAPER SHOULD (MUST) INCORPORATE ALL OTHER MODES OF WRITING SUCH AS 1. —–narration and description, 2. —–examples, 3. —–definition, 4. —–comparison/contrast (including metaphors or similes), Rivera-van Schagen 2 5. —–classification. YOUR PAPER SHOULD ALSO INCORPORATE 1. —–a reader’s hook (See handout on “Introductions, Theses, and Conclusions”); 2. —–brief background on the subject chosen (definition using similes and/or metaphors), 3. —–a strong, unified, and concrete thesis with the claim and three (3) reasons, 4. —–transitional topic sentences, 5. —–transitions throughout the essay to connect the parts (see Graff on using transitions), 6. —–examples to develop and support the reasons for the claim, 7. —–the naysayers, 8. —–formal Standard English only (no colloquialism, slang, contractions and other forms of informal writing), 9. —–Third person POV only unless providing personal examples for which you will shift to first person POV: 10. ——Gerald Graff’s templates: a. —–the quotation sandwich, b. —–transitions, and c. —–“so what?” and/or “who cares?” See outline template, and 11. —–the Works Cited page. For evidence and examples, you need to use one or all the sources read for class: Gerry Spence’s “Easy in the Harness: The Tyranny of Freedom,” Mohsin Hamid’s Exit West, Peter Singer’s “Escaping the Refugee Crisis.” BEFORE TURNING THE WORK IN FOR GRADING, MAKE SURE TO REVISE AND PROOFREAD FOR ORGANIZATION, GRAMMAR, COHERENCE, MECHANICS, AND MLA MATTERS. USE THE CHECKLISTS ABOVE AS GUIDES. USE THE SELF-EDITING CHECKLISTS AND INCLUDE THEM WITH YOUR FIRST DRAFT/OUTLINE OF YOUR ESSAY.
