INSTRUCTIONS FOR CREATING AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY • Locate recent relevant scholarly journal articles (by preference) and book chapters to be used in your literature review. NOTE: You should limit the number of books or book chapters unless they are edited collections of works. No more than three chapters can be taken from a single edited book. All works cited must be peer-reviewed. • Treat each source as a separate entry. • Each annotated reference should contain the complete citation for the work (APA Format or another suitable format used consistently) followed by two paragraphs that represent a summary and a critical appraisal. The reference must be complete with authors names and initials, the date of publication, the title of the article/chapter, the name of the journal or book, and volume and page numbers (or place of publication and publisher for a book). In many articles, there will also be a doi (digital object identifier) which can be included. However, you should not include information on how you accessed the article, such as link to JSTOR as this is not part of the reference. • The summary must identify the main point(s) of the article and the methodology used. It must be written in your own words and must not contain quotes. • The critical appraisal should identify the strengths, weaknesses (if any) and usefulness and/or relevance of the source to your essay. • You must include a copy of the abstract for each reference in your annotated bibliography. If you use a book chapter that does not have an abstract, include a scan of the first page of the chapter.
FORMAT The first page of the submitted material must have your name and student number, the title of the essay and a one to two-paragraph introduction that gives the research question that you will address. The title and introduction can be taken from your initial proposal or can be modified versions following the feedback given to you and the success or otherwise of your search of the literature. You cannot completely change topics without having discussed and then submitted a new proposal to the professor at least 10 days before the deadline for the annotated bibliography. The second and third pages must be a copy of the submitted version of your essay proposal text (the one that was marked). The fourth and subsequent pages constitute the annotated bibliography. All entries must be in alphabetical order by first author and each must be no more than one page in length. You must use a consistent citation style, either that of the APA or one of the journals that you cite in your annotated bibliography. All references must be given in full. (See the course outline for additional information on citations). The bibliographic reference may be single-spaced but the annotation must be double-spaced. You will lose marks if you exceed one page per reference or if you use a font size smaller than 12 pt.
